In the words of Chennai-based Blind Image, More Than Human is a concept album “based on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator experiment happening in Geneva.” And how would you soundtrack potentially apocalyptic nuclear physics experiments? With plenty of monstrous djent riffs, odd-time drumming and occasionally with clean-sung angst, according to the band. To a large extent, all of this works because all these elements in combination work together as the perfect mosh-pit detonator. Mixing metalcore and thrash riffs with progressive stylings, Blind Image straddles a happy space that fans of all three genres should be able to relate to. But that’s where the good news ends. In the process of amalgamating these different genres of metal, the band wear their influences so blatantly, you can almost pick out the parts that have been derived from other bands. Opener ‘More than Human’ is early Slipknot, ‘Deciphered’ could well be a barely-improvised ‘Toxic Garbage Island’ by Gojira, the djent riffs have all the blessings and trademarks of Meshuggah and the drums seem to seek inspiration directly from Animals as Leaders. On the bright side, this means the band has their musical chops in place, as they would need to even approximate the skill of these three bands. The album is hard to love if you know where it’s coming from but if you’re not about the references, you will enjoy this album very much.
